Letran wins NCAA overall title; CSB 2nd
Letran made up for its foiled title bid in basketball by ruling other events to capture its first overall NCAA seniors championship in seven years.
The Knights dominated five events in Season 85 to pile up 325 points and dethrone back-to-back title holder College of St. Benilde, which amassed 321.60 points.
Letran, which finished fourth in basketball, snared titles in men’s beach volleyball, chess, lawn tennis, women’s taekwondo, and men’s indoor volleyball.
It was the 11th general championships for the Knights, who last won the title via ‘seven-peat’ until 2003.
Despite its failed title bid, St. Benilde left an impressive mark as made it history by winning its first football title since joining the league 12 years ago. The Blazers did it by snapping San Beda’s eight-year reign.
San Sebastian College, the Season 86 host, wound up third with 306 points.
The Stags snared the basketball title after sweeping San Beda in a three-game finals series which also foiled the Red Lions’ ‘four-peat’ bid.
SSC was also tops in track and field and women’s volleyball, which it ruled for the fifth straight year.
Season host San Beda finished fourth with 289 points – thanks to its victories in soft tennis, swimming, men’s table tennis and men’s taekwondo.
The Staglets also ended the back-to-back reign of St. Benilde in the juniors division by scoring 295 points.
The SSC claimed the feat on the strength of its podium finishes in chess and track and field.
The junior Blazers were far second with 280 points, followed by Perpetual Help (233), San Beda (223), Letran (197) and Emilio Aguinaldo College (93), Mapua (78), Jose Rizal (64), Arellano (60), and Angeles University Foundation (57).
