The Internet and social networking sites have proven to be godsend for candidates seeking public office as being experienced by Liberal Party senatorial bet Brig. Gen. Danilo “Danny” Lim who is trying to campaign for his candidacy behind bars.

Aside from giving the detained general a chance to speak to his supporters and the voting public on various issues through videos recorded inside his detention cell at the Philippine National Police Custodial Center in Quezon City, the Internet also makes his camp save money from airing his infomercials by merely posting and reposting them via youtube.com, facebook.com and his official website, dannylim.org.

In youtube alone, a series of at least six video endorsements for General Lim, titled “Saludo sa Matinong Gobyerno,” was uploaded for public viewing. Lim’s media group also uploaded the general’s message to the public dated Feb. 10, 2010 for the official start of the campaign period and another message explaining why he is detained.

But compared with other politicians who capitalize on the popularity of celebrities, Lim’s roster of endorsers are composed mostly of activists like Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay, Akbayan Partylist Rep. Risa Hontiveros, Whistle-blower Joey de Venecia, former University of the Philippines president Francisco Nemenzo, Jr., women’s rights lawyer Lorna Kapunan, Jimmy Regalario of Kilusang Makabansang Ekonomiya, and Red Kapunan of the Rebolusyonaryong Alyansang Makabayan.

Lim also has celebrities who endorsed him like Joross Gamboa, Ariel “Tado” Jiminez, and Joaqui Tupas.
