Japan completed its domination over the Philippines Davis Cup team by winning the reverse singles for a 5-0 romp in their Asia Oceania Zone Group I Sunday in Osaka, Japan.

Cecil Mamiit, the RP team’s No. 1 player, bowed to Japan’s No. 2 Tatsuma Ito, 6-4, 7-6 (4), while junior netter Francis Casey Alcantara, who replaced Fil-Am Treat Huey, was beaten black and blue by Go Soeda, 6-1, 6-0, at the carpet courts of Namihaya Dome.

The Filipinos’ loss to Japan was their 10th in the history of the Davis Cup, and second at the carpet courts.

With the defeat, the Filipinos must hurdle their playoff match against Taiwan to stay in Group I.

In the first singles matches, Ito needed three hours and 18 minutes to survive past Huey, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, while Go Soeda beat Mamiit, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-3, 6-3, on Friday.
