ILOILO CITY – Mayor Jerry P. Treñas blames his political foes in the early Monday morning grenade attack on his restaurant and bakeshop beside his residence in Barangay Dungon A, Jaro District, this City.

The incident occurred at around 2:30 a.m..Two unidentified men riding in a speeding motorcycle lobbed a grenade near the entrance door to Treñas’s Carlo’ s Bakeshop.

The grenade blast injured the security guard on duty and damaged the bakeshop’s glass panels and main door.

“It’s not New Year’s,” an apparently irked Treñas said. “It’s not even about the breads; it’s politics.”

The March 8 attack is seen as the latest of a string of harassment and threats against Treñas after he announced his political breakup with the Gonzalezes to run and challenge the position of Gonzalez’s son Raul Jr. as congressman of the lone district of Iloilo.

Treñas said his political foes had been harassing him and his family and this latest attack only cemented his suspicion that the camp of former Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez Sr. will not stop until they succeed in injuring him or any member of his family.

Last January, the five children of Treñas were allegedly harassed by a police officer closely linked to Gonzalez when they were distributing relief goods to fire victims in Nabitasan, La Paz district. Also last month, the pawnshop owned by the mayor’s wife, Mrs. Rosalie Sarabia Treñas who belongs to the old, prominent Sarabia family of Sarabia optical fame, was ransacked by still unidentified persons.

Also last February, another alleged harassment incident occurred after motorcycle-riding persons drove past and fired shots at the gate of Treñas’s residence.

Gonzalez Jr. is running for Congress under the Lakas banner while Treñas, who used to be Lakas Chairman for Iloilo City, has left that party to run under the Nacionalista Party.

Gonzalez has denied Treñas’s accusation, indicating that the latter himself had masterminded the grenade attack to further his political ambitions.

Witnesses claimed that two persons riding in a motorcycle were seen near the restaurant-bakeshop during the grenade blast and sped away passing through the old airport area.
