Excelroof joins PBL leaders
Games on Thursday (Ynares Sports Arena)
2 p.m. — AddMix vs Pharex B Complex
4 p.m. — Fern-C vs Ascof Lagundi
Calvin Abueva scattered seven of his 11 points in the extra period as Excelroof outlasted Fern-C in overtime, 87-83, to forge a three-way tie for the lead in the 2010 PG Flex Erase Placenta Cup at The Arena in San Juan.
Though Abueva managed only to split his charities in two occasions he went to the foul line, it was enough for Excelroof to disarm Fern-C in a tight and tense duel and tie Pharex B-Complex and Cossack Blue for the lead at 4-1.
In the second game, Ascof Lagundi finally played true to its potential to beat Cobra Energy Drink, 74-71, and keep its semis bid alive in the season-ending tournament.
With the win, the Cough Busters improved their record to 2-3 while handing the Ironmen their second defeat in five games, thus making the semis race a lot more exciting.
Rob Labagala, a former stalwart of University of the East, struck hardest for the Cough Busters with 15 points.
“It was a scary win but I have to take it,” said Excelroof coach Ato Agustin.
“Mabuti na lang Calvin stepped up when we needed it most.”
The 6-foot-2 Abueva was all over the court once again, providing screens and picks to his teammates, but most importantly, he supplied the needed spark with his intensity. He also had eight rebounds, one steal and a shot block.
After NCAA Finals MVP Jimbo Aquino shattered an 83-83 count with a tough undergoal stab with 17 ticks left, Abueva came through with two defensive stops that sent him to the free throw area twice, the first one gave Excelroof an 86-83 lead as he muffed his first free throw with seven ticks left.
After forcing John Wilson to turn over the ball in the next play, he was again sent to the foul line to seal the deal.
