TANDAG CITY, Surigao del Sur – A magnitude 3.8 earthquake rattled anew last Wednesday residents of Mindanao’s southern tip city of Mati, in Davao Oriental, state seismologists said Thursday.

At least two tremors have taken place in Mati City within two weeks this month, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolcs said the more recent earthquake occurred at 10:43 a.m. with its epicenter estimated at 67 kilometers northeast of the said city.

The tremor had a shallow depth of 34 kilometers and was tectonic in origin.

It was felt as Intensity 2 in Tarragon and Caraga, both in Davao Oriental; and also at Intensity 1 in this city.

No damage or injuries were reported nor aftershocks were felt, Phivolcs said.

Last March 1, magnitude 5 quake also happened, 16 kilometers northwest of Mati City.

Prior to that, a magnitude 5.5 earthquake occurred 92 kilometers southeast of that same city on February 26.

Phivolcs said the area is seismically active because of the network of faults in the area that are connected to the complex fault system in the Molucca Sea.
