May 10 polls to push through, PNP assures
Top security officials Friday assured the public that the May 10 elections will push through and that there will even be a smooth transition to the next elected president.
Director General Jesus Verzosa, chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said the preparations being done by the Commission on Elections and the police and military are clear indications that the fears of "no-el" (no elections) or even failure of elections will not happen.
"We will have no failure of elections," said Verzosa in an interview, adding that "we are doing everything to have peaceful, orderly, and credible conduct of elections."
The official also expressed belief that the vigilance of the people will also play a key factor in thwarting any evil plan to sabotage the scheduled elections on May 10.
Even religious leaders from both the Christians and Muslims, he said, are actively working and even cooperating in order to ensure that the elections will push through.
"Having a peaceful and credible elections is what every Filipino wants; we have to join hands in making this possible," he said.
For his part, newly-appointed Army commanding general, Major General Reynaldo Mapagu, vowed that he will insulate the entire Army units from partisan politics.
"We will be non-partisan, we will ensure that we will help the Comelec, and in tandem with the Comelec, in ensuring honest, orderly, peaceful, and credible elections," said Mapagu.
"That is what we are going to do, and we assure the people that they (elections) will happen," he added.
Fears of no election or failure of elections scenario are being aired for the past few days following the occurrence of power outages and the placing of members of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class 1978, which adopted President Arroyo as honorary member, to key police and military positions.
