Patrombon gains semis

Jeson Patrombon added Australian qualifier Andrew Whittington to his growing list of victims as he scored an easy 6-2, 6-4 win to advance to the semis of the Grade 1 ITF/LTAT Junior Tennis Championships last Friday in Nonthaburi, Thailand.

Patrombon, who stunned No. 3 seed Dominic Thiem of Austria, 6-4, 6-3, the other day, hardly encountered trouble as his dominated his rival by coming through crisp passing shots aside from his brilliant net attack.

With the win, the 17-year-old pride of Iligan City earned a semis date with Benjamin Mitchell of Australia, who pulled off the tournament’s biggest upset by ousting top pick and world No. 8 Huang Liang-chi of Taiwan, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Patrombon’s victory made up for the shocking defeat of No. 4 seed Francis Casey Alcantara, who absorbed a 6-2, 6-3 loss from ninth pick Jeong Suk-young of Korea.

His confidence boosted by his big win over Thiem, Patrombon started hot, coming through with big winners to take a 5-0 lead.

Over at Bander Seri Begawan, Marinel Rudas continued to weave her own magic as she shocked second seed Amreetha Muttiah of Sri Lanka, 6-1, 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals of th Grade 4 Brunei ITF Junior Circuit.

Rudas, who earned an opening round bye, beat No. 14 Natnicha Ruangsumrej of Thailand, 6-1, 6-0, in the second round. She will next face seventh pick Tracy Dong of Canada, a 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 winner over No. 10 Yukina Saigo of Japan.
