Earth Hour aims to save P5 million
Once again, Filipinos are urged by Earth Hour organizers and the Department of Energy, to switch their lights off on March 27 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., which aims to conserve 811 megawatts of electricity or P5 million.
In a press conference held in Makati City, Earth Hour coordinators with representatives from the private sectors gathered once again to pledge their support to save the environment and called on the public to do their share in help curbing the global warming.
Cities and towns across the world will turn off their lights that would send a powerful global message that it is time to take action on globalwarming, said Catherine Maceda, co-convenor of Switch Movement.
Holding the campaign for third consecutive year, the Earth Hour conveys a powerful symbolic call to take action on climate change, which urges the public to be involved in the campaign. It is led by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), DoE, and Switch Movement.
Last year, Maceda said that the Philippines ranked first among all nations which participated in the event. At least 647 local government units (LGUs), business sectors and communities switched off their lights.
“Every single Filipino can commit to take action just by switching off their lights for 60 minutes. Ordinary people can do extraordinary things,” said Elisea Gozun, chairperson, Earth Day Network Philippines.
Jose Ma. Lorenzo Tan, WWF Philippines, urged the public to work together, saying “there are many solutions but we all have one planet and we must be part of that solution.”
Energy Secretary Leandro Mendoza said that it is important to unleash the power of the non-government units and all sectors of society, in adopting energy-efficient practices.
