RP: A Shopping Mecca for tourists & balikbayans
Here are just some of the reasons why tourists consider the Philippines as a “must-see” destination in Southeast Asia: health and medical services, eco-tourism, cultural and historical landmarks, world-class beaches in Boracay, Palawan, Mindoro, La Union, Batangas, Cebu and Bohol. On top of all these is shopping!
It is for this reason that the Department of Tourism (DoT) launched the Mabuhay Shopping Spree to project the Philippines as a shopping and entertainment destination.
The DoT partnered with major shopping centers in Metro Manila as part of the campaign in providing tourists shopping privileges such as special discounts and freebies.
“Shopping was never formally promoted in the past but now, the DoT is promoting it because many foreigners find shopping in the Philippines an interesting experience,” said Tourism Secretary Ace Durano.
Durano pointed to the number of shopping malls, tiangges, flea and night markets that abounds in the metro offering affordable and quality products.
Among the DoT’s partners is the Greenhills Shopping Complex that prides itself in being ready and prepared for the influx of tourists and foreign guests. Ongoing is the 17th National Furniture, Furnishing & Fashion Festival back-to-back with the 5th Philippine Folk Arts & Crafts until April 8, 2010.
