Patrombon bows out
The end finally came for Jeson Patrombon as he absorbed a 6-2, 6-3 thrashing from Australian Benjamin Mitchell in the semifinals of the Grade 1 ITF/LTAT Junior Tennis Championships in Nonthaburi, Thailand.
Although Mitchell wasn’t seeded like Patrombon, the Australian boasted of a higher ITF ranking of No. 125 compared to the Filipino’s No. 212.
Despite the loss, Patrombon earned 80 ranking points for his semis finish, as well as 20 points for his Round of 16 doubles feat with Thai partner Nuttanon Kadchapanan.
On the way to the semifinals, Patrombon disposed of wildcard Vitaya Lasavady of Laos, 6-1, 6-2; No. 16 Campbell Johnson of the USA, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4; No. 3 seed Dominic Thiem of Austria, 6-4, 6-3; and qualifier Andrew Whittington of Australia, 6-2, 6-4.
Upcoming female junior netter Marinel Rudas also ended her amazing run at the Grade 4 Brunei ITF Junior Circuit at Bander Seri Begawan, losing to seventh pick Tracy Dong of Canada, 6-2, 6-2, in the quarterfinals.
Rudas earned an opening round bye before blasting her seeded rivals, No. 14 Natnicha Ruangsumrej of Thailand, 6-1, 6-0, and No. 2 Amreetha Muttiah of Sri Lanka, 6-1, 6-3.
Rudas and Filipino partner Tamitha Nguyen also stumbled in their semifinal match against the third seed Japanese pair of Hitomi Naito and Haine Ogata, 6-2, 4-6, 10-6.
