DALLAS, Texas — Unheralded Filipino Richie Mepranum stunned the predominantly Mexican audience on Friday night with a 10-round unanimous decision win over unbeaten knockout king Hernan “Tyson” Marquez in their flyweight slugfest.
Utilizing his right jab, left straight and lateral movement, Mepranum, who hails from Sarangani province, caught Marquez countless times flush on the chin but his seemingly lack of power prevented him from taking out his favored foe.
The victory raised Mepranum’s record to 16-2-1 with only three knockouts, while the loss dropped Marquez’s mark to 25-1 with 18 stoppages.
The win was Mepranum’s third win on US soil, having also fought in Dec. 2008 and Nov. 2009.
Meanwhile, two other Filipinos are seeing action in the Manny Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey undercard set Saturday night at Cowboys Stadium.
In an eight-round bantam bout, Eden Sonsona, a protégé of the late Rod Nazario, battles former world champion Mauricio Pastrana of Colombia.
Michael Farenas, handled by former world champion Gerry Penalosa, takes on Joe Morales of San Antonio, Texas, in an eight-round feather tiff. — Nick Giongco
