Vigan women set to rule City Council on Monday
VIGAN CITY — Women leaders in this world’s heritage city will have a day-long reign at the City Council here as they take over its regular session on Monday.
The activity, which is done annually, is one of the significant events of the city in the celebration of the national women’s month that happens every March.
City Mayor Eva Marie Medina said that the activity is one way of giving tribute to all women who made integral part for the development of this city and of the country.
“We, women had been part of the greater majority of society for nation building, thus, women in Vigan are the partners for the making of what is Vigan now,” she said.
“We, women had also been proven as excellent leaders toward development. In fact, our country is presently ruled by a woman, the incumbent President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and we had our first woman country’s president in the person of the late Corazon Aquino from 1986 to 1992,” she added.
In the proceedings on Monday, incumbent City Councilor Lourdes Baquiran will be acting as presiding officer. All male city councilors will be represented by selected female leaders from the existing non-government organizations in the city.
“Before the issuance of laws establishing the celebration of March as women’s month, we are already celebrating annually this event to recognize the role of my fellow women for the development of the city,” Medina said.
To date, at least 30 percent from the appointed heads of offices of the city government are women.
