There is no ban on posters of former President Corazon “Cory” Aquino and former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr.

This was the clarification made by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) after a report came out saying that the Commission is contemplating to ban the posters of the two deceased national figures.

“That’s not true. We are not contemplating a ban on the posters or images of Ninoy and Cory. All we are contemplating was asking the City of Manila to take down streamers Ninoy and Cory that are already there,” James Jimenez, Comelec spokesperson, said.

The poll official was referring to the streamers of the two placed along Roxas Boulevard in Manila for the EDSA celebration last February.

“They were put up there for the EDSA celebration. EDSA celebrations are over and we are now on the thick of the election campaign. I think it would be ingenious of anyone to say that the image on the streamer will not be associated to one candidate,” said Jimenez.

‘In fact, the image of Cory is being used as a center piece for the campaign of Sen. Noynoy Aquino,” he added.

Jimenez said if the City of Manila put up streamers of that nature, they tend to circumvent the idea that one cannot post campaign materials anywhere except in common poster areas.

“It would have been civilized and logical thing to do to speak to the City of Manila and ask them to take down those posters,” he said.

“No disrespect was intended for either President Cory or Senator Ninoy,” added Jimenez.
