Lacuna resets swim record
Swimmer Jessie King Lacuna could be the country’s next Miguel Molina.
The 16-year-old Lacuna smashed the three-month old national and SEA Games records of Molina in the 200m freestyle by clocking one minute and 50.90 seconds in one of the qualifying heats of the event in the Singapore National Age Group Swimming Championships last Thursday in Singapore.
Molina, a two-time Olympian, clocked 1:51:71 in winning the gold medal in last year’s Laos SEA Games – which is both a national and Games record.
Molina’s previous best in the event was 1:52.56 which he set in the Janet Evans International Invitational tournament two years ago.
Lacuna’s feat earned him a slot in the RP team for the World Youth Olympics also to be held in Singapore after hurdling the qualifying time of 1:52:53.
His performance was a fitting follow up to his bronze medal finish in the 100m in the New South Wales Age Group Championships in Sydney, Australia last January.
Jasmine Al-Khaldi, likewise, bolstered her Youth Games bid when she clocked 2:04.98 in the girls 200m free.
Her clocking not only eclipsed the Youth Games Standard B time of 2:09.64 but also shattered Akiko Thomson’s National Age Group record of 2:07.23 set in the 15 to 17 years old category almost two decades ago.
