‘Gwen’ wary of extrajudicial killing report
Nacionalista Party senatorial bet Gwendolyn Pimentel Thursday expressed alarm over the United States report that extra-judicial killings as one of the major problems in the Philippines.
Pimentel, daughter of the Senate Minority Leader Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel, Jr., expressed concern that the same report noted that little had been done by the government to address the impunity.
If elected senator, Pimentel vowed to work on having the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police strictly adhere to the international standards in addressing human rights violations.
“If elected to the Senate, I will work towards making the military and the police force adhere strictly to internationally recognized human rights standards,” Pimentel said.
Pimentel said the ongoing trial of the Maguindanao massacre alone, is testament to the slow resolution of extra-judicial killings in the country.
The massacre implicated a member of the ruling Ampatuan clan in Maguindanao who is accused of killing 57 civilians, including 30 journalists, in cold blood.
“The trial of the principal suspect in the Maguindanao massacre has barely begun. And I will not be surprised if the trial will drag on for years, making it virtually impossible for the families of the 57 victims to obtain justice for their loved ones,” she claimed.
