Patrombon marchers to quarters

Jeson Patrombon stretched his winning run to barge into the quarterfinals Friday even as top RP junior netter Francis Alcantara bowed out in the Grade 1 Sarawak Chief Minister’s Cup Junior Tennis Championships in Kuching, Malaysia.

Patrombon, a wildcard bet, shocked 12th pick Wang Chuhan of China, 6-1, 7-5, while the fourth-seeded Alcantara bowed to No. 14 Dane Webb of the USA, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.

Patrombon’s win, his second straight against a seeded player, set him up for a Last 8 meeting with American Mitchell Krueger, who bumped off Ukranian Leonard Stakhovsky, 6-3, 6-4.

But while Patrombon ketps his winning touch in the singles, it was the other way around in the doubles as the Iligan native and his German partner, Matthias Wunner absorbed a 7-5, 6-4 beating from John Morrisey of Ireland and Ben Wagland of Australia in the second round.

Second seeds Alcantara and partner Jeong Suk-young of South Korea followed them to the exit after a 6-3, 6-2 defeat from Kalle Averfalk of Sweden and Patrick Elias of Germany.

After the Malaysian tilt, Patrombon and Alcantara will head back to Manila for the Grade 1 Mitsubishi ITF Junior Championships to be held at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center starting on Monday. — Kristel Satumbaga
