Dumandan bags crown
TRECE MARTIRES, Cavite — Marvin Dumandan closed out with a one-under-par 71 to capture the ICTSI Sherwood Hills Classic with plenty to spare at the Sherwood Golf and Country Club here Friday.
Dumandan, who turned 30 last month, finished with a two-under 214 total for a four stroke-victory over Orlan Sumcad and two-day leader Jay Bayron in the P1 million tournament.
Sumcad matched par while Bayron sputtered with a 76 under tough windy conditions.
Dumandan, who had earlier rounds of 71 and 72, started the day only one stroke behind Bayron. He birdied from the bunker on the par-3 11th hole to open a comfortable lead over flight mate Bayron, who stumbled with a 39 at the front nine.
“I’ve become more comfortable with my [Ping] irons. I guess it helped a lot,” said Dumandan in Filipino. He was also the only player to score an under-par total in the 54-hole tournament.
Dumandan had an eagle on the sixth hole and collected five birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey.
It was Dumandan’s third crown following his victories in the Apo Golf leg in 2008 and the Eagle Ridge leg in 2009. He hopes that his triumph, worth P200,000, will serve as a springboard to his Asian Tour campaign in India and Myanmar two weeks from now.
Mars Pucay mixed in eight birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey to submit the round’s best score of 69 and finish fourth at 219 in the company of Cassius Casas (75) and Tony Lascuna (75).
Jhonnel Ababa of ICTSI/Canlubang won the low amateur event with a 226 total after a final round 76. Teammate Mhark Fernando fired a 73 and finished a stroke behind.
