RP netters bow out

Three Filipino junior netters on Sunday made a quick exit in the first round of the qualifying for the main draw of the 21st Mitsubishi-Lancer International Juniors Championships at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Courts.

Calvin Canlas got beaten black and blue by American Simon Spencer, 6-0, 6-0, Romain Lepoutre bowed to Hungarian Gabor Csonka, 6-1, 6-1, and John Mavrick Victoria lost to Sylvester Alamdar of the USA, 6-1, 6-1.

The three winners advanced into the final qualifying phase where six winners will join the main draw.

Marianne De Guzman, Katrina Orteza and Jasmine Ho, meanwhile, start their qualifying bids this Monday against favored rivals.

De Guzman clashes with No. 4 Wang Ting-ya of Taiwan, Orteza collides with No. 5 Rongrong Leenabanchong of Thailand, and Ho tangles with No. 6 Gulnara Gabdoulline of Turkmenistan.

Francis Casey Alcantara banners the Filipino netters in the main draw where 11 locals have secured berths. Main draw action starts Tuessday.

Joining Alcantara in the 48-man field are wildcards Jeson Patrombon, Leander Lazaro, Kim Saraza, Akio Sy, Jacob Lagman, Clarice Patrimonio, Patricia Orteza, Shannin Olivarez, Marinel Rudas, and Tamitha Nguyen.
