‘Gibo’ seeks end to AFP, PNP intrigues
Former defense secretary Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro Jr. Wednesday called for an end to dangerous intrigues aimed at dividing the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), saying that those behind such schemes have given the country “a great disservice.”
Interviewed by reporters during a campaign rally in Marikina City, Teodoro also challenged those behind reports that President Arroyo has been harboring resentment against PNP Director General Jesus Verzosa apparently for airing his view against alleged plots that will pave the way for her continued hold to power after June 2010.
“I don’t know who is doing these intrigues. They are doing a disservice to the country,” said the Lakas-Kampi-CMD presidential bet.
Aside from speculations claiming a falling out between Mrs. Arroyo and Verzosa, the media has reported supposed fears aired by a Malacañang official of a possible takeover of a military junta should there be a failure of elections.
Teodoro said Verzosa and AFP chief of Staff Gen. Delfin Bangit are professional soldiers who will not allow such a scenario from taking place.
“Suffice it to say that I know PNP chief Verzosa to be a man of the law and a man of the Constitution. And just like him, I know Gen. Bangit also. Both of them will stay true to the Constitution,” Teodoro said.
He stressed that the Philippines can no longer take another extra-constitutional moves.
“I don’t know which party is doing these intrigues, they are doing disservice to the country. But I am sure these officers will stand their ground and do what is right,” he said.
Teodoro dismissed claims that Mrs. Arroyo and Verzosa are not in good terms as “pure speculation.”
He pointed out that the President has never declared that she resents the PNP chief.
In a related development, senior administration Rep. Pedro Romualdo urged detractors of Arroyo to allow her to finish her last three months in office “in peace.”
