Donaire vs Darchinyan in the works
A deal that will pit Nonito Donaire against Vic Darchinyan once again is now in the works, Top Rank revealed Saturday.
“We are working on it,” said Top Rank publicist Lee Samuels in a long-distance call from the US. “Nothing is signed yet and the offices are closed so we will start talking again next week.”
“We’ll make the official announcement as soon as the fight is done,” said Samuels.
The grudge rematch is penciled on August 21.
Samuels did admit that the Home Depot Center in the city of Carson, which is on the outskirts of Los Angeles, has been picked to host the much-awaited second meeting that had fight fans drooling the last three years.
Donaire, the California-based Filipino, was a huge underdog when he faced Darchinyan in July 2007 in Connecticut and his one-punch, fifth-round knockout of the Armenian-Australian remains a highlight reel even to this day.
Philboxing has reported that Darchinyan’s chief handler, Gary Shaw, has signed his name above the dotted line on behalf of Darchinyan, suggesting that a fight is within reach.
Since their first fight, the two have gone separate ways with Darchinyan experiencing more success than his arch-rival.
Darchinyan is now the holder of the World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association super-flyweight titles on the strength of his wins over Christian Mijares and Jorge Arce, marquee names in the 115-lb class.
Donaire has been on-and-off since taking out Darchinyan in stunning fashion and is aching to get his hands on the brash Armenian-Australian rival.
Top Rank has scheduled a May 8 fight for Donaire in Aguacalientes, Mexico, which the Las Vegas promotional outfit says will be a prelude to the Darchinyan rematch.
