Willie Revillame slams ‘slanted’ ABS-CBN News coverage

If there is anything “Wowowee” host Willie Revillame finds reason to rant about, it’s what he deems the somewhat slanted coverage of the Nacionalista Party campaign sorties by his own network’s news department.
In a report aired on April 12, Revillame raised an issue to ABS-CBN News for purportedly not showing the real picture, so to speak, saying: “Mag-Kapamilya tayo. Bakit kapag lumalabas kami…isang daang libo, dalawang daang libo [na tao]… hindi ninyo pinapakita? Ko-konti lang. Pero kapag ibang partido...” he trailed off.
But the controversial host was not trying to be funny at all. He went on to say on the clip, “Ang ipinapakita ninyo lamang, nakatayo kami sa stage. Ipakita ninyo naman ang katotohanan na punong puno ng tao.”
Revillame was slamming the coverage NP standard bearer Sen. Manny Villar’s campaign had been getting, wherein ABS-CBN allegedly would not show shots of the huge crowds that gather during their rallies. Revillame had reportedly cited an NP rally in Camarines Sur; and, in another instance in Korondal, South Cotabato, he apparently asked cameramen from different TV networks himself to go up on the stage just so they could shoot the huge gathering of supporters.
But while Revillame was quick to point out that he was not dictating how the media should do their job, he did add: “Kung magco-cover tayo, i-cover nating lahat. Ipakita natin lahat. Hindi ‘yong kami lang. Nakakasawa na ang mga mukha namin, ‘yong mga tumatakbo, ‘di ba? Dapat ‘yong mga tao [ang ipakita ninyo]… Ang mga tao naman ang bida rito, eh.”
Meanwhile, Revillame wasn’t the only Kapamilya star that turned on its own network. Kris Aquino, sister of Liberal Party presidential bet, Sen. Noynoy Aquino, was also reported to have criticized ABS-CBN News for its coverage.
Aquino was reported in tabloids to have referred to the people behind the news department as “evil people,” a sentiment that purportedly stemmed from when ABS-CBN News showed a video of Baby James blurting out Villar’s name during a campaign rally for her brother in Bacolod.
The youngest Aquino reportedly shared via a text massage that, "I won't be mad at the evil people of news, because Noy is now 12 points ahead. So I'll just forgive them for picking on an innocent 2 year old!"
For its part, ABS-CBN News believes it has been fair in its election coverage all along—the fact that the complaints came from both sides should be proof enough that they are not favoring one party over another.
