NCR, Bicol bets shine in Palaro

TARLAC CITY — Bicol and the National Capital Region each won two gold medals at the resumption of the Palarong Pambansa Tuesday at the Tarlac Recreational Park.
Bicol struck through Mark Harry Diones in the secondary boys’ triple jump and Marian de Dios in the secondary girls’ long jump while NCR won the first two events in gymnastics.
Diones, 17, of Libmanan, Camarines Sur, set a new meet record in the event with 14.46 meters, topping the 14.21 meters recorded by Paulo Martinez of Southern Tagalog in 2002.
His effort was a big improvement from his personal best of 13.50 meters in taking the bronze medal last year in Tacloban.
Central Visayas’ Ivan Castaneda, winner of the long jump, settled for the silver in 14.34 meters while Joenel Vargas of host Central Luzon got the bronze in 14.03 meters.
De Dios, on the other hand, had a leap of 5.17 meters, beating Calabarzon’s Michel Palmares (5.16) and Western Visayas bet Felyn Deloso (5.10), who took the silver and bronze, respectively.
Ralph Efraim Gesulgon gave Western Visayas its first gold in javelin (secondary boys) in 52.48 meters. Rizal Kasim of ARMM got the silver in 51.22 meters and Werjhon Albarico took the bronze in 48.52 meters.
In the other completed event, Southern Tagalog’s Mark Louie Ada bagged the gold in discus throw (elementary boys) in 26.39 meters. Ricson Baysa of Central Luzon settled for the silver in 26.27 and Jecson Palacay of Davao Region got the bronze in 26.05 meters.
Shut out in athletics for the second straight day, the Big City athletes dominated the start of gymnastics and defeated Cordillera Autonomous Region, 25-16, 25-5, in elementary boys’ volleyball.
Arielle Nichole Orella, an 11-year-old daughter of a factory worker from Tondo, led a 1-2-3 NCR finish the individual all-around with 53.380 points.
Teammate Princess Flores settled for second in 45.809 and Jelligyn Gerandoy got the bronze in 45.473 points.
The Big City gymnasts also ruled the rhythmic event with 144.690 (10 points), beating Ilocos Region (99,264) and Region 12 (91,838).
A total of 42 gold medals (21 secondary and 21 elementary) are at stake in gymnastics.
