Lyceum, behind a strong-finishing Porntip Santrong of Thailand, stunned Adamson University, 19-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-21, Tuesday in the Shakey’s V-League at The Arena in San Juan City.

In the second game, San Sebastian College gave Southwestern University a rude welcome as it hacked out an easy 25-17, 25-16, 25-17 win.

Drawing a combined 31 hits from guest player Suzzane Roces and returning Thai import and former MVP Jaroensri Bualee, the SSC lasses spoiled the debut of the Lady Cobras and their Thai reinforcement Lasungnern Piyatada who had 13 points.

The win – which took only 64 minutes to finish – allowed the SSC belles to join Lyceum, defending champion University of Santo Tomas and Ateneo in the win column of the tournament backed by Shakey's Pizza, Accel, Mikasa, Mighty Bond and PLDT MyDSL.

But while the SSC lasses frolicked, the Lady Pirates struggled in the early goings as Santrong took some time to find her game.

“I felt a little nervous,” Santrong, 19, said in broken English. “But I had a good stretching so I played better as the game wore on.”

Having only six days of practice with the Lady Pirates, the 5-foot-9 Santrong fired 26 hits to power Lady Pirates to their first win over the Lady Falcons in two years. The last time Lyceum won against Adamson was in the semifinals of the 2008 first conference when it prevailed with 3-1.

“She was really an asset,” Lyceum coach Emil Lontoc said in Filipino of their first ever foreign import. “With her on the team, I felt we can be more competitive against other teams.”

A six-time national team member of Thailand who saw action in the World Youth Volleyball Championship, Santrong started slow and had a number of errors in the first set.

But once she found her rhythm, the Business student from Rattabundit University proved unstoppable.

Santrong highlighted her debut with three straight kills in the second frame for a 15-12 lead as the Lady Pirates turned the tide of battle after yielding the first set.

The third frame followed the same script with Santrong becoming more dominant as she fired five straight thunderous kills to turn a 9-all tie into 15-11 bubble.
