Llena lifts 3 bronzes in Asian Youth tilt
Patricia Llena, one of the country’s bright prospects for the 2010 London Games, bagged three bronze medals in the 12th Asian Youth Weightlifting Championship Monday in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
A Singapore Youth Olympics qualifier, Llena won her first bronze in the snatch of the 63kg division with a lift of 87kg before adding another one in the clean and jerk with a 101 kg effort.
Her total lift of 181kg enabled her to clinch her third bronze to become the most productive in the three-man RP team which saw action in the 19-nation event.
Patricia’s sister, Leah, did not fare well as she finished a dismal eighth out of 10 in the total lift side of the 53kg event, sixth in the snatch and eighth in the clean and jerk.
Maybeline Pablo, who ruled the 69-kilogram event in Dubai last year, wound up fourth in all categories of her favorite event after lifting 70kg in snatch, 85kg in clean and jerk and 155kg in the total lift.
Patricia had already booked a berth in the Youth Olympic Games set Aug. 14-26 after she finished 10th in the 2009 World Youth Weightlifting Championship in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Meanwhile, Olympian Hidilyn Diaz and Kelle Kay Rojas were vying in the 58kg and 44kg events at presstime in the Asian Junior Women’s Weightlifting Championships which was also held in Tashkent.
Diaz, who competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics as a wild card, won a gold medal in last year’s Asian Youth meet in Dubai. She also won two gold medals in the snatch and total events two years ago. Rojas, 19, on the other hand, won three gold medals two years ago, sweeping all the events in the 44kg limit.
