Is Taguig City University (TCU), formerly known as the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Taguig (PLT), operating without proper accreditation from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED)?

District II Councilor Arvin Ian Alit said Taguig Mayor Freddie Tiñga should explain why he opted to open TCU even if its baccalaureate programs have never been approved by CHED since the university opened in 2004.

Alit said the lack of accreditation practically killed the chances of graduating TCU students to land jobs in the future.

“It is a pity that students work hard for four years and graduate only to find in the end that the school is not CHED-accredited,” Alit said during a campaign sortie in Signal Village.

Alit pointed out that Tiñga has been claiming that TCU is already registered with CHED “but we all know that there is a big difference between ‘registered’ and ‘accredited’,” he said.

Sought for comment, the Taguig Public Information Office (PIO) said that TCU “enjoys autonomy,” being a government university.

“In October 2006, CHED Commissioner Nona Ricafort issued an authority to Mayor Tiñga to operate the then-Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Taguig now known as TCU,” the PIO said.
