First Philippine Bible museum launched
The Philippine Bible Society (PBS) has thought of putting up a Bible museum as a new way to make the sacred scriptures more interesting to the people.
Nora Lucero, PBS secretary general, said they thought of putting up the museum since people in general don’t find the Bible interesting to read.
A survey conducted by AC Nielsen in 2005, she said, revealed that only 40 percent of Filipinos have a copy of the Bible with only 80 percent of them reading it.
Earlier, the PBS launched the “May They Be One” Bible campaign which aims to put a Bible in every Filipino home.
Lucero is hoping that through the museum, which is actually a first in the country, one will be made more aware of the history of the Bible and God’s words.
“The interest to be generated by this is intended to be the beginning of a deepening engagement of the museum guests not only with the Bible but with the incarnate word himself because God communicates through His word,” she said in an interview during the museum’s soft launching yesterday at the PBS Building along United Nations Ave. in Manila
The museum, Lucero said, will provide visitors correct information about the Bible using graphics in the form of pictures, video, art illustrations, artifacts and live presentations by experts.
She said a portion of the museum was also dedicated to the different Bible translations as this is the heart of their work in the bible society.
“The Bible museum also provides guests with information about the PBS, its history, culture, and its primary advocacies thereby suggesting ways how the museum guests can be part of the ministry of the PBS,” said Lucero.
But the dream of the PBS, she said, is really to influence particularly the children visiting the place for them to become good citizens.
“We are looking at how the Bible can be part of the children’s formation years…so they can see the Bible as not something very intimidating but something that they can engage with. Hopefully, they can read it and study it and become good citizens,” Lucero said.
PBS is the primary scripture source and authority in the country, respected and recognized by different churches and denominations.
