Continuation of conversation with Bayani Fernando, candidate for VP.
Q. What’s your campaign line?
A. I’ve been telling Marikina, Marikina needs an engineer. We’ve never had a president who was an engineer, so maybe now’s the time to say, elect an engineer (that’s me) to be vice president.
Q. What’s special about engineers?
A. They’re familiar with systems, efficiency, productivity. For example, the Korean company Hyundai has one million workers worldwide, but their output is equal to the entire output of the Philippines and its 40 million workers! Why do OFW’s get higher pay abroad for the same job? Because a shoemaker in Marikina makes four pairs of shoes a day, in China it’s 10 pairs.
Q. What’s your pet peeve?
A. If I were president, I’d overhaul education and clean up the markets, take out all the vendors selling dirty food and take out all the dirty, lazy market officials.
Q. As a driver I like those U-turns that you invented.
A. Do you know we save P1 billion yearly per U-turn on Quezon Blvd. – gasoline, policemen’s salaries, time?
Q. I miss a BF in MMDA, and I mean it.
A. There’ll be a new administration, a new MMDA.
