A policeman was hurt after he got stabbed while trying to break up a fight between two drunk fans of presidential candidates Sen. Manny Villar of the Nacionalista Party (NP) and Sen. Benigno “Nonoy” Aquino III of the Liberal Party (LP) in his neighborhood in Quezon City Sunday afternoon.

Superintendent Ramon Perez, commander of the Novaliches Police Station of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD), identified the victims as Senior Police Officer 2 Leopoldo Macaraeg, a resident of Barangay Bagbag, Novaliches, Quezon City. He sustained a stab wound in the left side of his body and was taken to the Philippine National Police (PNP) General Hospital where he remains confined.

Police are now hunting down the suspect – Henry Tera, 42, of A18 Don Julilo Gregorio St., also in Barangay Bagbag.

Investigators said that at about 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Macaraeg, who was off duty, was playing chess with a friend on Don Julio Gregorio St. when he heard a commotion a few meters away.

He later saw Tera arguing with Robert Torrifil, 22, on who between Villar and Aquino should win the May 10 elections. Neighbors said both Tera and Torrifil had been drinking for a while.

Because of the commotion, Macaraeg decided to intervene but Tera got hold of a knife and stab the policeman.

Tera fled upon seeing Macaraeg fell to the ground, leaving behind the knife.
