Texters too strong for Tigers

Games Sunday (Araneta Coliseum)
4 p.m. – Sta. Lucia v Ginebra

It did not take long for former MVP winner Kelly Williams and guard Ryan Reyes to make their presence felt for their new home – Talk ’N Text.

The former Sta. Lucia stars combined for 18 points in their debut as the Tropang Texters warded off repeated rallies of the Coca-Cola Tigers, 103-93, to boost their bid for an outright semis berth in the PBA Fiesta Cup Friday night at the Araneta Coliseum.

Williams, for one, hardly showed any difficulty in adjusting to the system of coach Chot Reyes as he churned out 13 points and four rebound while the 6-foot-1 Reyes chipped in five points and grabbed three boards aside from helping create scoring opportunities for his teammates in 20 minutes of play.

Their presence also made TNT’s job a lot easier as shown in the stats where six other TNT players scored in double figures.

Import Shawn Daniels led the Texters with 23 points and 17 rebounds while Marc Cardona and Ranidel de Ocampo – the league’s leading scorers – finished with 20 and 12 points.

Jared Dillinger, Harvey Carey, and Jimmy Alapag all scored 10 points in a brilliant show of firepower which is a bad news for San Miguel Corporation’s teams, especially for back-to-back seeking B-Meg Derby Ace and San Miguel Beer.

And they fashioned out the win despite coming off a 12-day break.

The Tigers tried to turn the game around in their favor but the Texters had an answer each time their lead were threatened.

Reyes credited their victory to three things – adjustment, communication and the sense of urgency.

“We focused much on adjustment, communication and the sense of urgency. We wanted to approach this game with a sense of urgency, to want the game more than the other team,” Reyes.

Reyes was also elated with the way Williams and Reyes responded to his challenge although he lauded everybody for their effort that improved their record to 7-2.
