Binay won in all age-brackets except for seniors – exit polls
Leading vice presidential bet Jejomar Binay prides himself in supposedly turning Makati City into a "Mecca of Senior Citizens" as mayor of the country's financial capital but ironically more elderly Filipinos supported his rival Liberal Party bet Sen. Mar Roxas during the May 10, 2010 automated elections.
According to exit polls undertaken by TV5-Social Weather Stations, Binay beat Roxas in all age groups, save for those aged 55 and older.
The opposition leader got 46.9 percent of the votes from those in the 18-24-year-old bracket, 42.5 percent from the 25-34 segment, 42.5 percent from the 35-44 bracket and 40.3 percent in the 45-54 segment. In the 55 and above bracket, Roxas got 43.4 percent while Binay had 34.9 percent.
During his interviews with the media, the 67-year-old Binay claimed he had the support of the elderly — about seven million in number according to his estimate — saying that he has turned Makati City into a "Mecca of Senior Citizens.”
He was referring to his program granting numerous benefits and privileges to elderly Filipinos which include: exemption from the payment of individual income tax; 20 percent discount from all establishments relative to utilization of transportation services, hotels and similar lodging establishments, restaurants and recreation centers, and on purchases of medicine; and free admission to movie houses anywhere in the city; and a minimum of 20 percent discount on admission fees charged by concert halls, circuses, carnivals, and other similar places of culture, leisure, and amusement.
The United Opposition (UNO) president however emerged winner in the exit polls with 35,825 voters from 731 of 802 sampled polling centers all over the country. He had 40.7 percent against Roxas' 38.3 percent.
