Bishops advise ‘Noynoy’
President-apparent Sen. Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III Tuesday got an advice from Catholic prelates especially on what the former should prioritize in his administration.
Former Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) president and Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo said that Aquino should prioritize education for the poor.
“Give more chances to the poor to be educated, and therefore I would give emphasis on education, especially projects like Scholars of Hope," he said over Church-run Radio Veritas 846.
Lagdameo said Aquino should also make good his promise to eradicate corruption in government in his first 100 days in office.
"It will depend upon his imagination and the imagination of his future Cabinet,” he said.
Corruption should not only be minimized but totally eradicated. How it will be done, that I do not know. It’s a very big challenge and a very big promise that he made," he said.
Pampanga Auxiliary Bishop Pablo David, for his part, urged Aquino to prioritize poverty alleviation.
“We have to generate meaningful employment because this is what we need in our country,” he said.
This, aside from returning to the negotiating table for the peace agenda, developing the countryside, infrastructure and transportation system among others.
Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas, meantime, advised Aquino to pray before making a decision for the country.
“My only advice is that in everything you do, pray before you decide, pray before you plan, pray before you lead,” Villegas told reporters.
“We will also pray for him from a distance,” he said.
The bishop served as the spiritual adviser of the mother of the Liberal Party’s presidential bet, the late and former President Corazon Aquino.
