Elite RP athletes’ training will continue – Romasanta
Asian Games chief of mission Joey Romasanta expressed belief that athletes chosen by Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Harry Angping will continue to undergo special training for the Asian Games set November 12 to 27 in Guangzhou, China even when a new PSC head is named.
There were talks that in the event Angping is replaced as chairman, the new PSC chief may decide to invalidate some of the training program initiated by Angping to boost the country’s campaign in the Asian Games.
Some names are already being floated as Angping’s replacement and one of them is Romasanta himself who is not new in the game having served as Gintong Alay head when Noynoy’s mother, Cory, became president and appointed him to the position.
Romasanta does not see the athletes replaced or rejected even under the new dispensation.
“I believe that these were the same names that their national sports associations submitted to us,” said Romasanta Tuesday when asked about what he intends to do with the athletes that Angping has named for intensive training.
Among the 14 athletes selected by Angping are taekwondo Olympians Tshomlee Go and Marie Antoinette Rivero, grandmaster Wesley So and Asian long jump champion Marestela Torres.
The country is taking part in 30 of 36 sports that will be played in Guangzhou with high hopes being pinned on combat sports like boxing and taekwondo.
