Reyes, Django advance in US 10-ball
Efren “Bata” Reyes and Francisco "Django" Bustamante bested their American rivals to lead the mighty charge of the Filipinos in the opening of the 2010 US Open 10-Ball championship at the Riviera Hotel and Casino Tuesday in Las Vegas Nevada.
Reyes proved too hot for Bobby Weimar, 9-3 while Bustamante was far more deadlier, blanking Neil Cummins, 9-0 Lee Vann Corteza also triumphed, beating Tony Robles, 9-6, to likewise advance to the next round of the tournament using a winner’s break format.
The winner in the event gets $20,000 – the same prize won by Dennis Orcollo in winning the 9-Ball Party Poker World Pool Masters Sunday.
Also getting off to fine start were Dennis “Robocop” Orcollo, who defeated Indian Raj Hundal, 9-4, and Roberto Gomez, who trounced British Imram Majid, 9-1.
Other Filipino winners were Al Lapena, who trounced American Peter Dimmick, 9-4, and Edwin Montal, who subdued American female player Jennifer Baretta, 9-6.
Other notable first round winners were former WPA World Junior champion Ko Pin-yi and Kuo Po-cheng of Taiwan, World 9-ball champion Daryl Peach and Karl Boyes of Great Britain, Marcus Chamat of Sweden, and Tony Drago of Malta.
