Binay isn’t thinking yet of reconciling with former allies
Outgoing Makati City mayor Jejomar Binay remains mum on possible reconciliation with former political allies who turned their backs on him, including Makati Representative Teodoro “Teddy Boy” Locsin Jr. and losing mayoralty candidate Ernesto Mercado.
“Hayaan niyo na muna akong magtampo sa kanila,” said Binay, when asked about a possible reconciliation with long-time friends who broke with him over political differences.
The mayor who is in a tight race for vice president against Senator Manuel Roxas appeared to be in an unforgiving mood, even sarcastically thanking Locsin for supporting his rival.
“Nagpapasalamat pa ako sa kanya (Locsin), dahil sa endorsement na ginawa niya, lalong dumami ang boto ko (I thank him because of his endorsement to Roxas, I gained more votes),” he said.
Last year, Locsin withdrew his support for Binay and worked as campaign manager for Mercado who ran for Makati mayor against Binay’s son, Erwin, who won the race.
Louie, wife of outgoing Locsin, ran in the ticket of Mercado, United Action Team, in this year’s election to replace Locsin in Congress. Louie lost the race to Councilor Monique Lagdameo, who was supported by Binay.
Locsin and Binay started their friendship during the People Power Revolution in 1986.
Mercado parted ways with Binay after the mayor reportedly reneged on a promise to support Mercado’s mayoralty bid this year.
Instead Binay fielded his son for the post.
Binay however claimed Mercado was the one who broke their political alliance.
Meanwhile, Binay said he will never forget his debt of gratitude to his presidential running mate Joseph Ejercito “Erap” Estrada.
Even if they have not discussed pressing issues about the elections, Binay said there is no conflict between him and Estrada.
