Jeson Patrombon and Francis Casey Alcantara, playing with different partners, won their doubles opener in style in the 51st Trofeo Bonfiglio Italian Open in Milan, Italy.

Patrombon, teaming up with British Gabb for the first time, stunned second seed Brazilian Guilherme Clezar and Japanese Yasukata Uchiyama, 6-3, 2-6, 10-7, while Alacantara, who partnered with Irish John Morrissey, turned back eighth pick Americans Nick Chappell and Dane Webb, 6-1, 7-5 to advance to the next round.

Patrombon and Gabb’s victory arranged them a date with Italians Marco Cecchinato and Giammarco Micolani, who beat the French pair of Mathias Bourgue and Mick Lescure, 6-3, 6-4.

Alcantara and Morrissey’s victory, on the other hand, set them up to a second-round confrontation with Austrians Sebastian Stiefelmeyer and Dominic Thiem, 7-5, 2-6, 11-9 winners over Mexicans Alexis Carlos and American Mitchell Krueger.

The RP bets’ triumphs in the doubles event more than made up for their failed singles bid.

The 17-year-old Patrombon showed feet of clay and fell in his second round singles match against Vitor Galvao of Brazil though he was able to extract a set in his 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 loss.

Alcantara made a first round exit the other day. Both Filipino juniors are preparing for the French Open which is the only grand slam played on clay.

Patrombon, who had earlier shocked third seed Kevin Krawietz of Germany, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5), settled for 30 International Tennis Federation (ITF) ranking points in the Grade A tournament.

But the points may not be enough to strengthen his hold on his No. 50 ranking that would put him in the main draw of the French Open junior tournament which begins this weekend.
