FEU, UST keep semis bid alive in Freego tourney
Far Eastern University and University of Santo Tomas beat their respective rivals to force another match in the quarterfinals of the 3rd-Freego Filipino-Chinese Basketball League (FCBL) Cup last Tuesday at the Buddhacare Gym in Quezon City.
The Baby Tams demolished Jose Rizal University, 98-88, while the Tiger Cubs turned back Ateneo, 90-82, to stay in the hunt for the semifinals berth of the annual high school cagefest also presented by Smart Communications.
Mico Custodio and Austin Fabian led the strong FEU charge against the Light Bombers, who failed to capitalize their twice-to-beat edge.
Custodio scored 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Baby Tams and was named the Freego Best Player of the Game. Fabian had 23 points highlighted by four triples to bag the Energen Best 3-Point Shooter of the contest.
In other quarterfinal matches, San Beda routed STI, 117-82, while Mapua survived the late run of La Salle Greenhills, 102-96, to enter the semifinal stage.
Richard Lontoc had 17 markers for JRU, which gets another chance today to barge into the next round of the tournament also supported by Mighty Sports, Colt Commercial, Star Galaxy Industrial Fabricator Inc., Powerbest Marketing Inc., Mandarin Sky Seafood & Shabu-Shabu Restaurant, Multimotors Auto Part Inc., and Apple Tape, starts this Thursday.
UST leaned on JP Sarcia and EJ Corre to score an upset over the twice-to-beat holder Blue Eaglets.
