Palace: All set for smooth transition of power
The delayed proclamation of winners in the presidential and vice presidential races will not in any way affect the transition work for the June 30 inauguration, Malacañang assured Friday.
Deputy Presidential spokesperson Charito Planas said moving the date of proclamation from June 4 to June 30 will not impinge on the hand over of leadership on June 30, saying that all is set for the smooth transition of power.
“There is no effect because three presidential candidates have already conceded except for one,” she told reporters.
Speaker Prospero Nograles proposed that the proclamation of winners for the two top posts should be moved to June 30.
Planas said that since Congress is the sole authority tasked to proclaim the incoming president and vice president, it is up to them if they will move the date of the proclamation.
“Well, the Arroyo administration has already formed the transition committee and it’s just awaiting…in fact, I am from Nayong Pilipino and we’ve just got an instruction that we name our representative who will be our counterpart on the next administration. So the Arroyo administration is ready and prepared to receive and so it is on the incoming President to appoint or name the counterparts of the exiting government,” she said.
The House of Representatives has formed a nine-member group that would work hand-in-hand with the Senate in canvassing the votes for president and vice president.
Both the Senate and House will convene on May 24 individually to map out the final set of rules of canvassing. After the approval of such canvassing rules, they will convene jointly at the Batasan Complex in Quezon City to canvass the presidential and vice presidential votes.
