Lakas likely to end up as minority party

The once formidable Lakas-Kampi-CMD (LKC) party faces the prospect of being relegated as a minority bloc in the House of Representatives unless outgoing President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, who won a seat in the chamber, reconsiders her decision not to run for House Speaker.

Zambales Rep. Mitos Magsaysay, a senior party member, aired this observation as she revealed that majority in the party believes that only Arroyo has the capacity to unite the party, which is currently without a president.

The party has yet to elect a new president following the resignation two weeks ago of its former head, Francis Manglapus.

Manglapus said he offered his resignation when Arroyo took over the reins of the party as chairperson. He added that he served only as party president to support the candidacy of former Defense Secretary Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro Jr. who ran but lost his presidential bid.

Magsaysay said she sees no other party member who may be capable of holding together the 109 winning LKC congressmen other than Arroyo.

“So far, we are still intact but many of us have received offers to support the other candidate for Speaker. Decisions will be made after the winning President is proclaimed,” she said.
