Abunda gets praises from Maza, Cruz
Representative Liza Maza of Gabriela Women's Party expressed support for Boy Abunda, amid reports of offers for the talk show host to head the Departmet of Tourism (DoT) and disrespectful remarks against Abunda’s capacity.
“Mr. Abunda deserves respect and not below-the-belt criticisms. Branding him as a mere entertainer incapable of doing serious government function is an unfounded and disrespectful remark. Worse, those judging Boy Abunda based on his gender preference are guilty of discrimination," Maza said.
Maza added that Boy Abunda's profession and background speak well of his qualification for any government post. "It should not be a hindrance whatsoever. He earned his good name and he obviously earned the people's respect because he excelled in the field that he has chosen,” Maza said.
Maza stressed that Boy Abunda is among the pioneer awardees of Gawad Lingkod Masa, an award giving project which recognized his track record and contributions to uphold women's rights.
But Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop-emeritus Oscar Cruz said that the tourism department needs somebody like Senator Richard Gordon who has proven to be effective for the post.
Gordon served as Tourism Secretary from 2001 to 2004.
Cruz pointed out that he is not belittling the capability of those people in show business like Abunda.
“I am not questioning their qualification like Mr. Boy Abunda. That is not fair because the guy is capable, but I’d rather have Gordon than Abunda because Gordon is really good and he proved himself already,” said Cruz over Church-run Radyo Veritas 846.
Cruz advised other showbiz personalities planning to enter politics to prepare for it just like what comedian Ai-Ai delas Alas did.
“They should study. I think Ai-Ai is doing a great thing and that she’s preparing herself for it looking in the future and joining politics she has covered at least the academic materials,” Cruz said.
“I praise Ai-Ai for this intention that she is preparing as early as now because I think she plans to run in 2013,” he added.
Earlier, Presidential front runner Senator Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III has also considered Abunda to be the next tourism secretary citing talent, competence and communication skills.
But Abunda, a close friend of Noynoy's sister and actress Kris Aquino declined the offer, saying he could help Aquino government even if he is not given a top government position.
