Gun owners support strict PNP checkpoints
A multi-sectoral group opposing the implementation of a permanent gun ban has expressed its support to the establishment of police checkpoints beyond June 9, 2010 end of the total gun ban period imposed by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to curb the proliferation of loose firearms in the country.
Officials of the newly formed A2S5 Coalition also expressed its gratitude to the PNP for including the group in the National Firearms Control Summit held at the PNP Multi-Purpose Hall in Camp Crame, Quezon City Friday.
“We, members of A2S5 after due consultation, relative to the 2nd Gun Summit held on June 4, 2010 at Camp Crame, after participating, observing and considering all the declarations, statements, statistics and experience shared, including the stand of Government officials and authorities, we conclude that our society today, despite intentions to the contrary, is not ready for a total and complete gun ban or gunless society,” Lawyer Constantino Navarro, A2S5 Coalition spokesman, said in a statement.
The A2S5 Coalition, which stands for Article 2 Section 5 of the 1987 Constitution on the right to life and to defend one’s life and family members, are composed of professionals from different sectors, including the judiciary, environmentalists, media groups, retired police and military officers, gun clubs, sport shooters and firearms dealers and manufacturers.
The A2S5 Coalition bonded to come up with a “common voice” in opposing an earlier proposal by the PNP chief Director General Jesus A. Verzosa to make the total gun ban permanent.
However, Verzosa opted for a stricter policy on the issuance of the Permit to Carry Firearms Outside of Residence (PTCFOR) instead of pushing for a permanent gun ban based on the inputs provided by the A2S5 Coalition and other so-called “pro-gun” advocates who aired concern for their personal security and that of their family and property under a permanent gun ban.
“It is likewise submitted that the Election Period practice of Police check points must continue even after Elections. Uncontrolled firearm and weapon possession is likewise unacceptable,” Navarro said.
Nonetheless, the A2S5 members assured the PNP leadership of their support by way of providing vital inputs that will boost the government’s campaign against loose firearms and lawlessness.
“We stand for a peaceful reasonable, non offensive gun ownership and the right to carry the same, as well as maintenance of comfortable lifestyle with the intention of assisting government authorities maintain all the foregoing,” Navarro said.
