Performing cities boost RP’s economic growth, GMA says
SHANGHAI, China – President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo emphasized the significance of emerging "performing cities" throughout the nation that give balance, coordination, and good vibrations for the country's sustainable economic growth, as she graced the opening of the Philippine Pavilion on Wednesday with its theme "Performing Cities" at the Shanghai World Expo here.
“Through our exhibit, we want to illustrate that there are many emerging performing cities throughout our nation,” Mrs. Arroyo said before the Philippine and Chinese delegations.
“A central pillar of our administration has been to lift up and develop cities all over the Philippines, not just our capital, Manila,” she added.
She also highlighted that the Philippine participation to the global exhibit provides the country the opportunity to further strengthen political, economic and cultural relations with China, in which the nation celebrates 35 years of diplomatic relations.
“We are very excited to be here today to celebrate Philippine Day at the Expo. It is appropriate that this occurs on the exact day of the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and the People’s Republic of China,” she said.
“I am proud that during my presidency, I have helped shape the relationship of the Philippines with China during its most formative years as an emerging global power. We look forward to continue growing our bilateral relationship with China for the benefit of the peoples of our two nations,” she added.
Shanghai Party Secretary Yu Zhengsheng, on his part pointed out the solid friendship fostered by the Philippines and China since 1975, which became a strategic cooperative relationship between the two countries.
He said the partnership of the Philippines and China led to a bilateral path to civilization.
President Arroyo also noted that the Philippine Pavilion introduces to the world the “sunrise” industries that are fast becoming pillars of economic growth in the country.
“These are representing significant opportunities for investment. These include giftware and fashion accessories, garments, arts and crafts, health and wellness, mining, information technology, home furnishings, and education services, among others,” she said.
“The Shanghai Expo affords the Philippines the change to showcase our readiness to reach the verge of First World in 20 years,” Mrs. Arroyo said.
She cited that the country have invested billions in new human and physical infrastructure to deliver greater modernity to every corner of the nation.
“These investments are paying off. Our nation and our cities are booming,” she said.
During the opening of the National Day of the Philippines at the Shanghai Expo, world-renowned Filipino artists showcased songs and dances led by pianist Cecile Licad, the Philippine Madrigal Singers, and Ballet Philippines.
Afterwards, President Arroyo visited both the Philippine and China pavilions.
Attending the Expo with President Arroyo were Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo, Trade and Industry Secretary Jesli Lapus, and Press Secretary Crispulo Icban Jr.
