If the President has a State-of-the-Nation Address (SoNA), three government education agencies are also prepared to bare the report card of the country’s education sector at the 2010 Philippine Education Congress.

The education agencies – the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd), Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA), and the Department of Education (DepEd) – comprise the Presidential Task Force for Education (PTFE) created by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in 2007.

They were tasked by the President to come up with the event to highlight the gains of the country’s thrusts toward improving the education sector to further encourage and inspire partners and stakeholders to help the government achieve its main objective of providing quality education for every Filipino.

Set on Friday, June 11, 2010, at the Fiesta Pavilion of the historic landmark Manila Hotel, the event dubbed “Sa Ikauunlad ng Bayan, de kalidad na Edukasyon ang Kailangan” will be graced by President Arroyo along with key officials of the education sector.

Over 900 education leaders and administrators including students, teachers, and parents from both public and private education institutions for the basic, secondary, technical vocational and tertiary levels, officials from CHEd, TESDA and DepEd are expected to be part of the event, which will feature the accomplishments of student scholars, faculty and families who have benefitted from programs and projects of the government’s education agencies.

During the congress, the President will be feted as an “education president” for her legacy in paving the way to a more solid and directed Philippine Main Education Highway, and her commitment to putting education at the forefront of her development thrusts as a road map for a strong and educated Filipino.

Among the programs initiated by the Arroyo administration are the implementation of a preschool standardized curriculum, making English a primary medium of instruction, in-service and pre-service trainings for teachers, investments in English, Science and Math trainings, scholarships, leveling the playing field for SUCs and HEIs, increased capacity of the Tech-Voc sector, industry academe linkages and other social development programs.

Key officials in the education sector who will attend the event are Education Secretary Dr. Mona D. Valisno; Fr. Bienvenido F. Nebres, SJ, of the Ateneo de Manila University, who serves as chairman of the PTFE; CHEd Chairman and PTFE co-chairman Atty. Emmanuel Angeles, and Dr. Pastor Z. Guiao, director general of TESDA.
