‘It Depends’ Day
FEARLESS FORECAST. There will be no Malacañang wedding for the next 6 years. The President-Elect said he will first ask the seer, Madame Auring.
You’re supposed to pop the question to Shalani, Sir, not to Auring!
Former President Diosdado Macapagal moved our national day from July 4th, 1946 (when America returned our independence) to June 12th, 1898, the Proclamation of Philippine Independence.
Day of Russia is celebrated on June 12th since 1990, the date Russia declared state sovereignty from the Soviet Union. Guess who’s gaya-gaya?
Cong Dadong’s more pragmatic daughter PGMA signed RA 9492 declaring June 12th Independence Day and 5 other national days moveable to the nearest Monday. So, it depends…if June 12th falls on a weekend, “holiday economics” give citizens a non-working Monday holiday for a 3-day weekend.
Something went wrong in communication between the transition teams: President-Elect Benigno Aquino III declined the invitation to the Independence Day celebrations believing it was PGMA’s last hurrah on Monday, 14 June, instead of the 12th of June 2010.
Was there a written invitation? Or was it conveyed verbally, ambiguously, so that the President-Elect got it wrong?
Not a few columnists also thought that Independence Day was to be celebrated on June 14th. Yet the diplomatic corps was present at the Vin d’honneur on 12 June 2010.
Another PGMA fancy footwork which caught everybody out of step.
In any case, today is another non-working holiday. Happy “It Depends Day” June 14th, 2010!
P’Noy said outgoing President GMA called to congratulate him. Collect (reverse charges)?
US President Barack Obama called to felicitate the President-Elect. He was only taking the cue from PGMA.
UNPRECEDENTED. The U.S. President also spoke to VP-Elect Jejomar Binay. Bro to Bro protocol.
Traffic snarled at business center with the celebration of Araw ng Makati with 9 mega floats. The Republic of Makati has its own national Day with participation of a few foreign embassies.
Makati floats could have joined the June 12th national parade or today’s “It Depends” day.
GOOD NEWS. VP Jejomar Binay chooses the old Makati municipal building as VP office.
BAD NEWS. This means that senior citizen perks of free movies, R1,000 birthday gifts and birthday cake will apply only in Makati, not nationally.
VP-Elect wants DILG. I had a boss who never gave the job to someone who aspire for it… perhaps for a reason.
It makes sense to give the MMDA to VP Binay. His excellent record as Makati Mayor could be put to good use, the way Bayani Fernando applied his Marikina experience in MMDA.
And he is kept out of harm’s way. Feedback: jaz@mb.com.ph
