TV reporter falls in Taal crater
Apparently, he had wanted to get a scoop for his television network and put one over fellow journalists.
In the end, however, he became the subject of the news – all because of that desire to deliver the news for his TV network.
This was the case of TV reporter Joshua Garcia who fell into the Taal crater while trying to get a better coverage of the volcano using his personal video camera Thursday afternoon.
Lieutenant Commander Troy Cornelio, Coast Guard Batangas Station chief, said Garcia of Global News Network (GNN), a local cable news agency owned by cable television provider Global-Destiny, was doing a situationer report about Taal Volcano when decided to go down the crater alone despite warnings and discouragement from his crew members and authorities.
“Sa una pa lang, we discouraged him already to go down the main crater because it is too dangerous, from some point the water temperature in the crater increase tremendously, hindi mo masasabi ang pwedeng mangyari. (We had already discouraged him to go down the main crater portion because it is too dangerous, from some point the water temperature in the crater increase tremendously, you can't tell what's will happened next.),” Lt. Cmdr. Cornelio said.
When Garcia failed to respond to text messages and calls after an hour, his cameraman and driver started to get worried. They sought the assistance of Coast Guard personnel.
Coast Guard divers from the Special Operations Group (SOG) and local police personnel of Talisay went to the crater and later found
Garcia five hours after he went down the crater.
SOG divers said Garcia almost passed out.
“Nanghihina na siya (Garcia) nung matagpuan siya ng operatives natin from the SOG unit, halos mawalan na nga ng malay. [He (Garcia)
was already weak when he was rescued by SOG operatives and he almost passed out],” Cornelio added.
Garcia was taken to the Talisay Municipal Hospital. When he recovers, Garcia will be summoned by the Talisay Police for further investigation.
Cornelio advised members of the media to stay away from the crater. He said mediamen will only be allowed to go to the crater if they are accompanied by authorized personnel.
