2 RP bets compete at Wimbledon
Two Filipinos made it into the main draw of the doubles competition of the Wimbledon Open which gets under way next week in England.
Filipino-American Treat Huey and Indian Somdey Devvarman won two gruelling qualifying matches to make it to the 64-pair draw.
Huey and Devvarman edged Switzerland’s Yves Allegro and India’s Prakash Amritaj, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-2, then upset the Polish pair of Tomasz Bednarek and Mateusz Kowalczyk, 7-6 (8), 7-5.
Fil-Am Riza Zalameda, on the other hand, will play alongside 2009 US Open quarterfinalist Melanie Oudin in the women’s draw.
Huey and Devvarman, long-time partners at the University of Virginia, will meet Davis Cuppers Rohan Bopanna of India and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi of Pakistan in the first round, Zalameda and Oudin face a tougher assignment against third seed Nadia Petrova of Russia and 2010 French Open finalist Samantha Stosur of Australia.
“It’s a great honor for our country to see them play in the Grand Slam. And it’s a good exposure for Treat for his Davis Cup and Asian Games preparations,” said Philippine Tennis Association official Randy Villanueva.
Aside from Huey and Zalameda, RP bets Jeson Patrombon and Francis Casey Alcantara will also be seeing action in the juniors division.
Patrombon also clinched a main draw seat following his International Tennis Federation rankings of No. 37, while Alcantara will have to go through the qualifier after slipping at No. 60.
Junior matches will start on June 26.
