Misamis, Cobra clash for second leg crown
GENERAL SANTOS CITY — Misamis Oriental forged a title showdown with Cobra Energy Drink as it easily stomped away Manny Pacquiao and the rest of the Pacman Gensan Warriors, 78-70, Friday in the second leg of the Tournament of the Philippines at the Lagao gym.
Former NCAA standouts Khiel Misa, Dino Daa, and Mark Andaya along with Mark Moreno were responsible in the Meteors' strong start that resulted in a 22-point advantage.
Not even the presence of Pacquiao, who arrived during the second quarter and played the whole duration of the third canto, couldn’t provide the spark for the home team as MisOr successfully earned a trip to the finals to face the Ironmen, in a match being played at presstime.
”It’s going to be tough to face Cobra, they’re young, athletic and talented,” said coach Jun Noel, whose team lost to Cobra 70-69 in the elims.
Both MisOr and Cobra finished the elimination round of this leg organized by the Philippine Basketball League and Liga Pilipinas tied with identical 2-1 records after the latter failed to complete a three-game sweep.
That’s because Ricky Ricafuente stunned everyone by burying a buzzer-beating trey from about 30 feet as Treston Laguna stunned the Ironmen, 84-83, to barge into the win column.
With 0.9 seconds remaining, Leo Losentes threw a long inbound pass from near their goal into Ricafuente, who successfully fired the miracle shot before the horn to the disbelief of the fancied Cobra squad that led 83-78 with 1:32 remaining.
