Pacquiao’s assistant disagrees with Roach
There are only three persons involved in the delicate negotiations to bring about the megabuck match-up involving Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather.
“The only guys involved in the talks are Manny, (promoter) Bob Arum, and myself,” said Mike Koncz Wednesday afternoon after learning about a report in a Canadian newspaper saying that trainer Freddie Roach is certain that the Filipino would give in to the demands of Mayweather.
Koncz, who is one of Pacquiao’s top confidants, obviously disagreed with Roach’s opinion adding that “they will not be held hostage by Mayweather."
In the interview, Roach said Pacquiao will eventually soften up his stand on the issue of random drug-testing, the main focal point in negotiations to reach an accord for a Nov. 13 fight.
“At this point I feel that Manny is going to agree to everything,” said Roach as quoted by Morgan Campbell of the Toronto Star in its June 28 issue.
“That’s our bluff. We’re going to call his bluff. We’ll see…I can’t speak for Manny, I can’t speak for (Bob) Arum but I feel the fight will happen because Manny is going to call his bluff and say “’let’s do it,” said Roach.
Roach is in Toronto to help Fil-Am female fighter Ana Julaton in a fight scheduled Wednesday.
Koncz said everything is being done to put together a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight but “it won’t be the end of the world if this fight doesn’t happen.
Being eyed to step up the place in case a Mayweather fight doesn’t take place are Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico or Antonio Margarito of Mexico.
