A Filipina worker in a Middle East country was jailed last month for alleged possession of 1.68 kilograms of heroin, the group Migrante revealed on Saturday.

Migrante Middle East Regional Coordinator John Leonard Monterona said authorities in Iran intercepted the overseas Filipino worker (OFW), identified only as “Rosalie” (not her real name), allegedly carrying the illegal drugs.

“The Philippine Embassy in Iran confirmed this report in a letter we received July 1, which was signed by its Charges de Affaires,’’ Monterona said.

Rosalie has been detained at Mashhad Central Prison after her arrest and investigation for illegal drugs possession, the letter from the Charges de Affaires stated.

“The letter states that the Philippine embassy in Iran was informed of Rosalie’s arrest on June 16 by the Iranian Foreign Ministry,’’ he added.

Citing a relative who sought the assistance of Migrante, Monterona said Rosalie was initially recruited to work as a waitress in Thailand but was later issued a tourist visa for her supposed departure last March.

On the third week of May, Rosalie allegedly told her family that she might be leaving for Iran.

The family, however, were caught by surprise when Rosalie reportedly called them last June 27 to inform them of her predicament after having been jailed and charged with possession of illegal drugs.

True to its mandate to assist OFWs, Migrante appealed to the new government to provide representation and legal assistance to Rosalie.
