Mendiola farmer-rallyists freed
The 42 members of a group of farmers from Southern Luzon were released the other night after their arrests by operatives of the Manila Police District (MPD) while camping out at the Mendiola Bridge.
The 42 members from the Katipunan ng Samahan ng Magsasaka, Southern Tagalog, were released after being rounded up, Saturday afternoon.
Jobert Pahilga, the legal counsel of the demonstrators, said that he was told by Chief Supt. Rodrigo Magtibay that they do not plan to file cases against the group.
The MPD director supposedly told him that they merely wanted to ensure that the area (Mendiola Bridge) remains clean and orderly.
The group camped out at the Mendiola Bridge for four days, before they were rounded up.
Magtibay said that they merely wanted to get rid of the "kubol" which the demonstrators used as temporary shelter while holding the demonstration.
The protesters were supposedly asking the newly installed Aquino administration to implement genuine agrarian reform.
